Surgery may be recommended for the following conditions in Crohn’s disease:
intestinal blockage
excessive intestinal bleeding
fistula
bowel perforation
infection with abscess
toxic megacolon
Sections of diseased colon may be removed in a bowel resection of the small intestine or colon. In a strictureplasty, a portion of the small intestine narrowed due to scarring may be widened.
Removal of part of the colon is common. In a colectomy, the entire colon is removed. In a proctocolectomy, both colon and rectum will be removed. An ileostomy may be necessary to allow the elimination of waste through a hole in the abdomen.
According to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, up to 75% of Crohn’s patients will eventually have surgery. Although surgery may be necessary in an emergency situation, there are other options for treatment. Your body has a great capacity for healing with the proper support.
