Guaranteed for Life
My daughter’s Crohn’s diagnosis left us tearful, sad, and discouraged.
Kitty’s GI told us she’d never fully recover. Her case was severe. She would most likely need steroids, immune suppressants, and/or biologics. And the side effects of the most effective drugs could be devastating.
Our doctor’s help was critical to the recovery that followed. We needed a diagnosis and help – fast!
However, the stories I heard and read from others relying on conventional treatment were dismal.
… some were taking entire days off from work for monthly infusions …
… others packed a J-pouch …
… and one joked about carrying matches everywhere she went
Our Solution – Changes in Diet and Lifestyle
As I scoured the web, the library, and my community for success stories, I discovered others who were thriving with alternative approaches:
- Elemental protocols (shown in studies to be as effective as standard drug treatments)
- Variations of Specific Carbohydrate, Paleo, and other anti-inflammatory diets
- Nutritional Supplements and lifestyle changes
In the two weeks between the colonoscopy and the official diagnosis, Kitty made radical changes to her diet and eating habits. She could no longer see blood in her stool and had fewer cramps. At the next appointment, her doctor allowed her to begin treatment with low-risk ASA drugs and close monitoring.
When we returned home, we did not follow the recommendations of the “low residue diet” pamphlet they gave us. It recommended crackers and other processed foods that contribute to inflammation! Instead, we drew from the Maker’s and SCD Diets and experimented with rotation. We were creating our own road map to recovery.
Rapid Results
Low-risk drugs combined with diet and lifestyle changes began to bring our daughter back to life. After a few months, she weaned herself off the drugs. And six months after diagnosis, Kitty’s doctor repeatedly checked the chart to make sure there had been no mistake. Kitty had normal inflammatory markers, healthy weight gain, and a rosy complexion.
He said to keep doing what we were doing. She didn’t need drugs.
Six years later, another GI told us it didn’t matter what my daughter ate. She could have pizza, ice cream … the works. It wouldn’t make a difference unless she had a food allergy or sensitivity.
Everyone’s different, he explained, and Kitty’s diet seemed to be working for her. However, the short course of the ASA drug was obviously responsible for her recovery. Sure, the results were highly atypical. Her health had mysteriously improved and could reverse again at a moment’s notice.
In fact, he was certain she would relapse. And there was nothing we could do about it.
Seriously?
